The one stitching, the one shaping clay, the one threading a loom

4.7 million Australians make things by hand. New research links manual skill to brain development in childhood and dementia prevention in later life — making craft a public health story, not just a cultural one.

There are 4.7 million Australians who get up each day and make something with their hands — a fact the Australia Council quietly confirmed back in 2019, in a factsheet most people will never read, about a habit most people don’t think to count. It sits there in the data the way a hand sits in a pocket: present, useful, and almost entirely unremarked upon. And yet that hand — the one stitching, the one shaping clay, the one threading a loom — is doing something far more consequential than making an object. It is, on the weight of a growing body of research, building the very brain that’s using it.

The story we tell about hands these days is a story of obsolescence. Hands, in the dominant narrative, are what we used to use before the machines got good enough — a romantic leftover, a weekend hobby, a “nice” thing to do once the real work of the day, done on a keyboard or a screen, is finished. Craft is filed under nostalgia. Manual skill is filed under “things AI will do better soon.” The hand has been demoted, in the modern imagination, from tool of survival to accessory of leisure.

CWA’s own research suggests the opposite is true, and the evidence is uncomfortably specific. Roughly 46% of the human somatosensory cortex — the brain’s sensory command centre — is dedicated to the hands alone (Penfield and Boldrey, 1937; Zeharia et al., 2020). That allocation isn’t decorative. By six months of age, a baby’s fine motor function is already forecasting how well they’ll speak at age three (Libertus and Landa, 2018). By three to four, a child’s ability to clap in time to a beat is recruiting the exact same neural circuitry used for reading — not preparing for it, but performing it (Bonacina et al., 2018). This is precisely why early childhood curricula are built around finger painting, building blocks and clapping games: it isn’t busywork. It’s brain construction, using the hand as the contractor.

And then, somewhere around the start of school, we stop saying any of this out loud. The same fine motor skill that predicted language at three goes on quietly predicting reading, maths and IQ right through to age thirteen (Pitchford et al., 2016; Xie et al., 2024) — and then the conversation about hands simply disappears for the next sixty years, as though the brain that needed loading at five no longer needs it at thirty-five. It reappears, abruptly, in aged care: a randomised controlled trial in Japan found twelve weeks of structured handicraft significantly improved executive function in adults in their seventies (Kobayashi-Cuya et al., 2025), and it was hand dexterity specifically — not grip strength — that predicted the improvement (Kobayashi-Cuya et al., 2018). Grip strength itself turns out to predict death more accurately than blood pressure, across 140,000 adults in seventeen countries (Leong et al., 2015), and lower handgrip strength is now linked to higher rates of dementia diagnosis and dementia mortality in UK Biobank data (Batty et al., 2022), with one ten-year study putting the dementia hazard ratio at 2.33 for those with weak hands (Tari et al., 2024). The hand, it turns out, never stopped being a brain organ. We just stopped paying attention to it for forty years in the middle.

That forty-year blind spot lines up, almost too neatly, with a wider pattern. Skilled manufacturing work in Australia fell from a quarter of the workforce in the 1960s to roughly one in twenty by the early 2020s (Ai Group, 2020) — an entire generation’s hands going quiet at scale, in homes and workplaces both. The same window saw IQ scores reverse their century-long rise in the countries that deindustrialised earliest (Bratsberg and Rogeberg, 2018), and the most recent PISA results showed the steepest drop in reading and maths scores the assessment has ever recorded — sharpest in the most screen-saturated, most deindustrialised nations (OECD, 2023). None of this is an accusation. It’s closer to physics: the hand is essentially humanity’s original tool — we dug with it, we worked with it, we evolved because of it — and a species doesn’t get to retire its primary tool and expect the rest of the machine to run exactly as before.

So cultural heritage, reframed this way, stops being a conversation about buildings. UNESCO’s own case study of Austria’s regional craftsmanship centres makes the point well: the value of the Werkraum Bregenzerwald or the Textile Center Haslach was never really the timber and looms inside them, but the apprentices, school visits, and master-to-novice transmission happening within their walls — knowledge passing from one set of hands to the next before it has the chance to disappear. Heritage, on this view, isn’t what we preserve behind glass. It’s what we choose to keep teaching, what we decide is worth earning a living from, and what we hand forward to people who haven’t been born yet. That’s the difference between a citizen who contributes to a legacy and a consumer who simply uses one up.

Which brings the figure back to where it started: 4.7 million Australians, making things with their hands, often without anyone telling them what that’s quietly doing for their own cognition or for the country’s. They are not hobbyists keeping a dying pastime alive out of sentiment. On the evidence, they’re running a low-cost, lifelong cognitive maintenance programme — for themselves, and for whoever they happen to be teaching it to next.
