Why join
When you choose your maker name,
you are not filling in a form.
You are putting your work on the map — a public, permanent record of what you make, where you make it, and who you are.
Think of it the way a musician chooses their artist name. It is yours. It is the start of something real. Your Maker’s Mark. Permanent.
CWA membership is not a subscription to a network. It is a place in a national record — the first of its kind in Australia. Every maker who joins now is building the record that will matter.

Before the contract, before the signature, before the state — there was the knot. The knot was the law. In China, 100,000 years ago, each knot encoded information, settled disputes, changed legislation. The cord was always red — red for life force, protection, and good fortune. Governance and blessing, braided into a single continuous thread.
In Japan, the same red thread carried fate across distance. In Korea, knots were used in royal courts and Buddhist ceremony — talismans for blessing. Celtic sailors tied knots as silent promises to the people they loved. Every tradition reached the same conclusion: no beginning, no end. The loop is continuity. The loop is eternity.

Among all the knots in the world, there is one that climbers and sailors reach for when someone’s life depends on it holding. The figure-8 — the safety knot. Two equal loops, neither above the other, each one depending on the other to hold its shape. The more force applied, the tighter it holds.
This is CWA’s founding symbol. Not because it is beautiful, though it is. Because it does exactly what CWA does — it holds. It holds women’s cultural work: work that has always been done, always been essential, and has gone unrecognised for the same 100,000 years that knots governed communities.
The red knot changed laws in ancient China. In red, it marks the Creative Women’s Association — naming, certifying, and safeguarding the cultural work that has always been there, waiting to be counted.

The Women in Culture Awards are Australia’s first formal recognition for women whose work sustains, transmits, and advances the nation’s cultural life.
Recognised recipients enter the CWA Heritage Skills Registry — a permanent, publicly accessible record of the practitioners and knowledge-holders who constitute Australia’s living cultural infrastructure.
There is no cost to nominate. Self-nominations are welcome in all categories.
Membership is recognition.
The Awards make it permanent.
CWA members who are nominated for — or who nominate — a Women in Culture Award are building the national cultural record from two directions at once. The membership is the foundation. The Awards are the formal act of recognition. Together they are the infrastructure Australia has never had.
Nominations are free and open to the public. Self-nominations are welcome in all categories.

Every product tells a story. The wool grown on a farm in Ararat. The hands that spun it in a studio in Ballarat. The weaver in Geelong who turned it into cloth. The designer in Melbourne who made it into something a woman will wear for twenty years.
The Southern Cross Registry exists so that story is never lost. Your Unique Provenance Identifier is your permanent place in that chain. When a buyer anywhere in the world scans a QR code on a product that passed through your hands, your name, your place, and your practice is part of what they find.
