CWA Membership · Australian Makers
Whatever you make — we will protect it, certify it, and help you sell it. Even into the European Union.
CWA membership is the entry point to the Southern Cross System — the infrastructure that turns what you make into something the world can find, verify, and buy. The first six months are free. Your Unique Provenance Identifier is issued once and held for life.
You make it. We protect it.
Louise Bourgeois began by restoring tapestries in her parents’ workshop in Paris. She went on to become one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. Her hands were the foundation of everything that followed.
What CWA is building is the infrastructure that should have always existed for women like her — and for women like you. A system that recognises what your hands produce, records who made it, and ensures that value flows back to the maker.
Whether you weave, throw pots, tool leather, blow glass, make lace, or carve wood — CWA membership puts your work on the record. Permanently.
Your craft. Your name. Your permanent place in the record.
What’s included in your membership
01
Your Unique Provenance Identifier
Your permanent maker number in the Southern Cross Registry — issued once, held for life, regardless of membership status. Issued in SCR-XXXXX format. It is your verified identity within Australia’s national provenance record.
About the UPI →02
The Southern Cross Seal
Your certification hallmark — applied to your work, your labelling, and your marketing. The Southern Cross Seal tells buyers your work is independently verified and registered in the Southern Cross Registry. It is issued to you. It travels with your work.
About the Seal →03
Your Marketplace Storefront
A verified seller listing in the Southern Cross Marketplace — visible to individual buyers, galleries, tourist centres, fashion designers, interior designers, and institutions across Australia and internationally. Your work, with your name on it, in front of buyers who are looking for exactly what you make.
The Marketplace →04
Open Commission Access
Access to the Open Commissions platform — where designers and brands post paid briefs for made-to-order work. You read the brief. If it suits your practice, you put your hand up. You make it. You get paid at rates benchmarked above the Textile Award floor.
Open Commissions →05
Get Your Craft on the Map
Entry into the Australian Geographical Indications Directory for Crafts, Industrial Products, and Cultural Works — the national record that will underpin Australia’s GI framework under the AU-EU Free Trade Agreement. Your practice, your place, your provenance. On the map. Permanently.
The GI Directory →06
Provenance Rights Protection
When a brand uses your provenance story commercially — in their marketing, their labelling, their product narrative — they pay for that. The Provenance Rights Licence returns a royalty along the registered production chain. Your name, your place, your hands. That has value. It always did.
Provenance Rights →Even into the European Union
From mid-2028, every textile sold into European Union markets must carry a Digital Product Passport — independently verified supply chain data that a buyer can scan at point of sale. It tells them exactly what the garment or piece is made from, who made it, and where.
CWA’s provenance certification system is built to be EU Digital Product Passport compliant from day one. Your Registered Provenance Credential — the QR code you receive for every certified piece — links directly to your verified entry in the Southern Cross Registry. That is your Digital Product Passport. On your swing tag. Scannable anywhere in the world.
Makers who register now are building that record already. Those who do not register before the deadline will not have it.

Get your craft on the map
The Australian Geographical Indications Directory for Crafts, Industrial Products, and Cultural Works is the national record that maps where Australian cultural production happens — who makes what, where, using what technique, in what tradition.
Every CWA member is listed in the Directory from the day they register. Your entry documents your practice, your provenance chain, and your location — building the evidentiary record that Australia’s GI framework under the AU-EU Free Trade Agreement will draw on. The makers who register now are the ones who will be in that record when it matters.
