In 1919, Walter Gropius called for a new guild of craftsmen, free of class pretensions, united in building something that rises from the million hands of makers. The Australian Crafts Alliance is that call answered in Australia — a national network of Centres for Craftsmanship, connected by one standard, one mark, and one collective voice. Where Are the Women’s Trades?

On 1 December 2025, the EU activated full legal protection for craft and industrial geographical indications — CIGIs — covering lace, glass, jewellery, textiles, ceramics, and cutlery as formally recognised trades. Japan has done the same since 1950. Australia has no equivalent classification. CWA explains what “craft and industrial products are trades” actually means in law, and why Australia’s women have never been offered the trades their grandmothers built.
