In 1919, Walter Gropius called for a new guild of craftsmen, free of class pretensions, united in building something that rises from the million hands of makers. The Australian Crafts Alliance is that call answered in Australia — a national network of Centres for Craftsmanship, connected by one standard, one mark, and one collective voice. The designation is open now.

Where Are the Women’s Trades?

On 1 December 2025, the EU activated full legal protection for craft and industrial geographical indications — CIGIs — covering lace, glass, jewellery, textiles, ceramics, and cutlery as formally recognised trades. Japan has done the same since 1950. Australia has no equivalent classification. CWA explains what “craft and industrial products are trades” actually means in law, and why Australia’s women have never been offered the trades their grandmothers built.

On 17 October 2003, UNESCO adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage by overwhelming majority, naming traditional craftsmanship alongside language and ritual as a category of heritage requiring legal protection. One hundred and eighty states have since ratified. Australia has not. CWA has built the infrastructure ratification would require — twenty-three years after the world said yes.

In the nineteenth century, a Kashmiri shawl weaver had a formal apprenticeship pathway, a quality standard, and a global market. The textiles she made sell for thousands of pounds today. In Australia in 2026, 0% of the creative workforce operates under a national standards framework, 73% have no access to formal professional development, and girls are not offered equivalent trade pathways to boys. CWA is rebuilding the infrastructure that was never replaced.

The Bauhaus Knew.

The Bauhaus lasted fourteen years. Its founding idea — that craft and art, trade and design, hand and mind are not separate hierarchies but a single discipline — has lasted a century. CWA is building the institutional infrastructure that idea required and never received: the sector recognition, certification, registry, and workforce classification that makes skilled cultural production a formally governed, economically legible, professionally credentialled field in Australian law.
