Objects carry culture across time — but only if they carry their mark. The hallmark, the maker’s seal, the stamp on the base of the pot: these are the mechanisms by which made things become documents of human history. The Geographical Indications Directory for Crafts, Industrial Products, and Cultural Works and the Southern Cross Mark are the infrastructure that ensures Australian cultural production enters the archive — at the moment of making, not after the story is lost.
